How the check works
We compare your name with the live Companies House register. You see any exact match first, then the 10 closest existing names, so you can spot names that are too similar before you apply.
Names that are refused
Companies House rejects a name that is the same as an existing one once endings like Ltd, Limited, UK or punctuation are ignored. Sensitive words such as Bank, Royal or Chartered need permission, and offensive names are not allowed.
When the name is free
